Sunday School

EDUCATION AT GRACE

Our Education Ministry oversees the education plans for all ages at our church, pre-school through adults. We endeavor to partner our activities with other ministries at Grace to support and enhance church-wide programs.

CHILDREN’S EDUCATION

We feel that children are the “life blood” of the church, so they have a vital place in the life of Grace. Each Sunday Pastor Craig invites the children to join him for “Time for Young Disciples” during worship services. On special Sundays, they contribute to the worship service offering music, readings or other gifts they have prepared.

Sunday School

We presently offer two classes: prekindergarten through grade 1; grade 2 through 6. Both follow the Bible-based Presbyterian published “We Believe” curriculum. Although the curriculums are different, to suit the age levels, they follow the same scope and sequence. Sunday School follows “Music Time” and is in session from 10:10-10:45 in rooms 102 and   . Summer Sunday School classes include art projects related to their studies, as well as sessions which focus on the theme of the upcoming VBS experience.Given the age of the children, we focus on the stories and characters of the Bible.  The children enjoy hearing, play acting, and doing crafts related to the stories.

Children’s Music Time

During Music Time our children enjoy preparing songs to be later sung as contributions during our worship services.  They also work on music for their Christmas program, VBS, and other events. Grace’s Music Director and one of our Praise Team members direct the children.

Children’s Mission Programs

Grace’s children learn the importance of Christian giving as they participate in:

  • Heifer International (late spring)
  • Compassion International (ongoing throughout the year)
  • One Great Hour of Sharing (Lent)
  • Mitten Tree (Advent)
  • VBS Mission Efforts (summer)

Vacation Bible School

Grace partners with Westminster Presbyterian and in 2014 will be using Group’s curriculum “Amazing Wilderness”. All will learn about the chosen people as God guides them through the wilderness to the Promised Land. Dates for VBS this year are July 28-August 1. We will meet at Grace in the evenings.

Children’s Art Show

This annual event usually occurs the last Sunday in August. Art work that the children have created during their summer Sunday School classes is displayed.

Teaching our children is very important to us.  We follow the We Believe: God’s Word for God’s People curriculum.  This Presbyterian curriculum offers something for all ages – it tells the stories of our faith in a variety of ways to allow for different learning styles as well as for age appropriateness. This curriculum helps all participants develop a common understanding of how we as Presbyterians understand the Word of God and apply that understanding in our daily lives.  For those who have come to the Church from other faith traditions, the curriculum serves as a basis for understanding who we are and what Presbyterians believe.Every facet of We Believe begins with the Bible and relates to the message of Jesus Christ. The curriculum encourages biblical literacy for all ages.  More information on this curriculum can be found at the following website: http://www.pcusa.org/webelieve/

6th Grace Sunday School

The 6th grade students meet in room 107 from 9:50 – 10:45 each Sunday morning. Studying the Presbyterian curriculum “I Know My Bible”, the children will explore the entire Bible reading their new New Revised Standard Version Bibles. The program is divided into 6 week units. The units are: The Torah, Hebrew History, Hebrew Wisdom, Prophets, Gospels, The Early Church, and Letters to the Early Church. We treasure this class. It serves as the bridge between the Children’s program and the Youth programs at Grace. In this class, in addition to studying the Bible, we engage in service projects to familiarize the children with the acts of selfless giving and service. Every year during the Christmas season, the 6th grade class visits Mission Arlington Christmas Store and helps in a variety of ways. This past year they sorted and organized toys.At the end of the year, this class has a celebration party where their many accomplishments are honored.  At this gathering (usually a pool party at a members house), the class has fun and then typically challenge a few adults of the church to a Bible knowledge trivia contest (any bets on who usually wins?).

3rd Grace Bible Presentation

Each third grade student is presented a Bible as a gift from Grace Presbyterian Church during a worship service in August. The Children’s Education Ministry feels it is important for children to learn the stories of the Bible in Bible Trek classes. It is equally important that they learn how to use their Bible and read it in their daily lives. The children are encouraged to bring their Bibles to Sunday school classes each week.
